Native American Wedding Dresses Are Very Culturally Specific Wedding Dresses!The Native American wedding dresses are unlikely to be favored in the modern world by any one who is not a Native American, as unlike other traditional wedding dresses that have little appeal to others not from that culture. Native American wedding dresses are very culturally specific and not really likely to appeal to the bride of today.
Native Americans naturally wore a lot of animal skins which provided them with warmth; however, this is not really the done practice in the modern world. In fact, there is a significant campaign against wearing animal skins, another reason why this has not been seen as a cross-cultural fashion exchange. Real native american wedding dresses are not widely received like they were generations ago.
Marrying in the Native American tradition was a very tribal affair, and the bride's wedding attire would be made by the groom. Other men from the village would assist him should they wish to help, so traditionally it would certainly be his brother and his father for example. They had to create a set of clothes, all of which played their part in the wedding ceremony, and would be kept throughout their life together.
It was also tradition that the bride was redressed in this outfit on her death, otherwise she would not be granted passage through the underworld. Firstly they would need to make two pure white wedding robes, and then a third white robe which had to have a red stripe added at the top and the bottom. These would be worn in combination during the course of the ceremony and following celebrations. All of the robes would be worn with the trousers or leggings that they made, and these had to be manufactured from buckskin, and in particular white buckskin, ensuring they had enough of said skin to also manufacture a pair of moccasins for her to wear.
Finally they had to craft a belt, a lace to tie back her hair (all Native American women would have long hair, as it was not cut as this would not have been appropriate), and a mat of reed, which was used to wrap the whole outfit to present to the bride, and later to store the outfit until it was needed again. The groom and his assistants would remain at the house of the bride until the whole outfit was finished and wouldn't be doing anything else for this time. It was simple attire, but obviously one that fitted with the normal attire of the Native American tribes. However, knowing what the outfit consisted of, it is little surprise that it hasn't been taken into the modern world. Native american wedding dresses are usually only worn by true traditionalists.
It does have massive significance for the tribes, as all married women were subsequently laid to rest in their wedding robes, which gives it a poignant twist that isn't seen in many of the other more popular wedding dresses. An element of Native American symbolism has made it into the modern world, and patterns survive and have been used by those who have a Native American heritage to add a touch of history and acknowledgement of their roots to a much more modern bridal outfit.
